A stunningly patinated Italian Grand Tour Sorrento ware inlaid occasional or coaching table c.1860
With a deep and richly coloured top, wonderfully patinated and worn.
This piece is created from a variety of rare timbers including satinwood, ebony, olive wood and boxwood.
The central circular panel features classical animated figures laughing and joking wearing traditional Italian costume while holding what appears to be a tournament flag.
Surrounding the panel is a dark ebony border with an intricate outer banding which is based upon micromosaic geometric forms made up of thousands of tiny pieces of mixed wood, reflecting the Italian obsession for ‘tesserae’.
The table stands upon three collapsible turned wood legs which pivot upon a central bolt enabling the table to be easily transported, allowing for it to be used, not only as a coaching table, but also in the garden on those beautiful sunny days!
A wonderfully time-worn Grand Tour treasure.
